FAQ and Resources

The access cover for my septic tank is buried, I no longer want to dig it every 2 years. What are my options?

This is very common for septic tanks. An easy solution is to install a ‘Manhole Riser’ on your Septic Tank. They are easy to install and it gives you easy ground level access to your septic tank for pumping and maintenance.

How long does a septic system last?

On average 20-30 years.

Why is my septic system having issues during rain?

During heavy rain, your drain-field can become over saturated; therefore, not allowing proper drainage into the ground. Try to use less water during this time to allow the drainage field to recover.

Are Bleach/Cleaning Solutions bad for my septic system?

Too much bleach or other cleaning chemicals are harmful to the necessary bacteria inside your septic tank. Try to use 100% natural or biodegradable products if you have a septic system.

How do I locate my septic tank?

If you don’t know where your septic tank is, you need to locate it for pumping and maintenance. Call a professional! Ask them to locate your septic system. This is also a good time to install manhole risers to your septic tank for easy access moving forward.

How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

It varies depending on the size of your septic tank and the number of people in the household. Refer to this chart.

What does a Septic Filter (effluent filter) do?

An effluent filter is installed on the outlet (outflow pipe) of your septic tank. Its purpose is to stop any solids from leaving the septic tank and entering your drainage field. This filter needs to be cleaned regularly to insure it does not create a septic backup.

What should I do if I am smelling odour near my septic tank?

It's normal to smell an odour near the septic tank occasionally. If the odour is constant, you may need to contact a professional for servicing.

Why does my septic tank not have manhole access?

Old septic tanks are covered by multiple slabs of concrete. A solution is to have a professional remove the slabs and install a new lid that has manholes for access.
